Infofish Is Setting The Stage For TUNA 2024 12 March 2024

Infofish is speeding up preparations for the 18th World Tuna Trade Conference & Exhibition in Bangkok, also called TUNA 2024. The event will be held from May 20 to 22 with the theme ‘Advancing Blue Transformation, Sustainable Development and Innovation through the global tuna industry.’ It is jointly organized by the Thailand Department of Fisheries, Thai Tuna Industry, and three RFMOs (IATTC, IOTC, and WCPFC). Atuna has been the supporting media partner of the conference for the past few years and will continue to do so. The organizers are collaborating with the UN’s FAO and Spanish canning association Anfaco.

Over 500 participants from 35 countries are expected to participate in TUNA 2024 that will be held at Shangri-La Hotel. Forty-one booths will be set up for companies and organizations to display their tuna and other seafood products, equipment, and machinery. The Infofish website has stated that there will be 43 speakers from the tuna industry, but are yet to reveal their names. Registrations for TUNA 2024 have been open from the beginning of this year.

Indonesia Seizes Unlicensed Filippino Seiner In Its EEZ 7 March 2024

Indonesia recently seized a Filippino-flagged mini purse seiner which was illegally fishing for tuna in its waters without a license. Three crew members were detained. A spokesperson from the Indonesian Fisheries Ministry said that the capture not only demonstrates the country’s resolve to enforce fishing laws “but also reflects the broader challenges faced by Southeast Asian nations in managing their maritime resources amidst regional tensions.”

The incident is likely to tarnish the regional fishing operations between the two Asian countries, reported news sites. Last November, the Indonesian government accused Filipino fishermen of illegally deploying FADs in the waters bordering the two nations.

Mozambican President’s Immunity Confirmed On Appeal 6 March 2024

London Court of Appeal ruled that Filipe Nyusi, President of Mozambique, is entitled to immunity as the head of state. He cannot be prosecuted in Britain for accepting bribes in the African country’s ‘tuna bond’ scandal. This follows the ruling by the High Court last year when shipbuilder Privinvest wanted to involve Nyusi in the lawsuit filed by the Mozambican government.

In September 2023, Abu Dhabi-based Privinvest was sued by prosecutors of the African nation seeking USD 3.1 billion in damages. The shipbuilder denied allegations that it paid USD 130 million in bribes, stating they were “investments in legitimate businesses.” Privinvest wanted to drag Nyusi into the case accusing him of accepting USD 11 million in payments for his presidential campaign in 2014.
